Meet your Instructor

Hello! My name is Leslie Lau (He/him).

Born in Canada and raised in Hong Kong, I am dedicated to teaching and sharing the joy of music with others. I discovered my passion for drumming at the age of 15. I formed a profound emotional connection with music and fell in love with it.

My Education / Credentials:
I pursued the Contemporary Music & Technology program, majoring in Drum Set and Music Production at Selkirk College in Nelson, BC. I had the privilege of learning from some of Canada's most esteemed music professionals, including Steven Parish, along with Juno Award winners Mike Rud and David Restivo. I also participated in masterclasses led by Grammy Award winners Larnell Lewis and Greg Wells. In 2017, I achieved Distinction in the Grade 8 Rockschool Exam - Drum Set.

My Teaching Experience:
With over 4 years of teaching experience in non-profit settings and private music schools, I've connected with a diverse range of learners, from ages 2 to over 60, embracing multiple cultural backgrounds.

In 2024, I designed and taught the Percussion Program at the Richmond Children’s Arts Festival, fostering the musical talents of over 200 students aged 8 to 12. This program provided participants with a memorable and delightful introduction to music, enhancing their rhythmicality and creativity.

What is the most rewarding aspect of being an instructor?
I cherish the lasting trust and connections I have built with my students. I take great joy in witnessing their growth as musicians and individuals, often sharing memorable gatherings with their families.

One standout experience was when a student received a performance opportunity just hours before the show. She excelled in learning songs by ear and improvising with the band, showcasing her talent and adaptability. Moments like these reaffirm my passion for teaching.
